Dutch offense erupts in women’s soccer win

MOUNT VERNON – Six goals in the first half propelled the Central College women’s soccer team to a 9-0 win at Cornell College Friday afternoon.

The Dutch (2-0) had six different players find the back of the net before the first 45 minutes ended. Olivia DeVos (junior, Altoona, Southeast Polk HS), Lila Gwyn (freshman, Cincinnati, Sycamore HS, Kylie Boomstrom (junior, Forest Lake, Minn., Forest Lake Area HS), Sami Anderson (sophomore, Urbandale, Des Moines Christian HS), Lucy Tiedemann (junior, Kirksville, Mo.) and Jordan Torres (sophomore, Parker, Colo., Ponderosa HS) all chipped in with a score.

“It was great to have six different goal scorers contribute and to play all 30 field players and goalkeepers who traveled,” coach Mike Kobylinski said.

DeVos, Gwyn and Tiedeman recorded braces as each tallied another goal in the second half. Central’s offense peppered the net all game with 22 of 41 shot attempts coming on frame. Gwyn also was credited with a pair of assists.

“We are a very hard team to stop in attack because we can attack in waves,” Kobylinski said. “We have very good depth and some outstanding leadership.”

Four Dutch goalies combined for a shutout, facing just two shots.

Central hosts the College of Saint Benedict (Minn.) at noon on Sunday.
