Donald Wonderlich, 68, of Ollie, died on Friday, December 7, 2018, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. He was born December 13, 1949, in Fairfield, Iowa, the son of Keith and Betty Sloan Wonderlich.
Don attended Pekin Schools.
Following school, Don enlisted in the United States Army, he served from 1969 – 1971. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to Ollie. Early on Don worked at Chain and Cable in Fairfield for a few years.
On November 13, 1973, he was united in marriage to Cheryl Ann McVay at Sigourney, Iowa. Cheryl died on June 22, 1994.
Don worked for a short time driving truck for Bill Winn Trucking. Most of his working life he spent doing construction. He started out working for his father’s construction company Wonderlich Construction. In 2003, the business transitioned to him, he owned and operated Wonderlich Construction until 2017. In the spring of 2017 he went back to work at Bill Winn Trucking hauling rock.
Don enjoyed woodworking and taking care of his property, especially his pond. He was a member of the American Legion. He delighted in spending time with his family.
As a final act of love and generosity, Don’s wish to be a tissue donor was honored by his family. Through the selflessness of Don and his family, donor recipients are given a new lease on life.
Don’s family includes his significant other, RenElla Crawford of Ollie; four children: Robbin (& Tony) Clubb of Hedrick, Nathan (& Tasha) Smith of Kalona, Nichole Smith of Ollie, and Keith Crawford of Ottumwa; ten grandchildren: Jennifer Clubb, Jessica Clubb, Delany Smith, Macey Smith, Jamison Smith, a baby Smith on the way, Keelan Scott, Kylin Williams, Quincy Crawford, Audrey Crawford, and Jordan Crawford; three brothers: Jeff (& Yvonne) Wonderlich of Ollie, Terry (& Rhonda) Wonderlich of Ollie, and Craig Wonderlich of Florida; a sister in law, Janie Wonderlich; a brother in law, David (& Diane) McVay of Georgia; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
In addition to his wife Cheryl, Don was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Michael Wonderlich; and a sister, Ann Wonderlich.
A celebration of life service will be held Thursday, December 13, 2018, at 1 p.m. in the Fremont Funeral Chapel in Fremont with Reverend Frosty VanVoorst officiating.
As was Don’s wish his body has been cremated.
Burial of the urn will be in the Rock Creek Cemetery. The Fremont Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation with the family present will be on Thursday from 11 a.m. until service time at 1p.m. in the Fremont Funeral Chapel.
