DES MOINES — The Central College track and field team closed out the 109th edition of the Drake Relays with a new school record in the women’s distance medley relay.

Crossing the line in 12 minutes, 16.77 seconds, Central finished second in the Iowa College Division of the women’s distance medley relay.

“They competed hard and ran within themselves,” coach Joe Dunham said. “It was good to see them do well on the blue oval.”

The men’s distance medley relay team cemented itself as No. 4 all-time at Central in a time of 10:03.69 and placing fifth.

Running the 1,600-meter anchor leg, Evie Kammeyer’s (senior, Urbandale) split time of 5:05.5 helped the Dutch move up from sixth to second.

“Evie just ran incredible,” Dunham said. “She ran really smooth and really smart. She didn’t try to do too much too fast and slowly moved up in the pack.”

Holly McKinney (senior, St. Charles, I-35 HS) led off with 1,200-meter leg before Kate Patton (senior, Murray) ran the 400 and Kiki Pingel (freshman, Pella) ran the 800.

“Kiki’s split was really good, too,” Dunham said. “It was a big part of how we were able to get a school record today.”

In the men’s race, it was Kyle Pape’s (junior, Dubuque, Wahlert Catholic HS) 800 meters split (1:53.63) that took Central from eighth to fifth.

“I was really happy with his effort today after him having a good split in the 4×800 Thursday,” Dunham said.

Jon Specht (senior, Dubuque Hempstead) led off and Mitchell Yaw (junior, Orange City, MOC-Floyd Valley HS) was second. Mark Fairley (senior, Dubuque) anchored the team.

“It was definitely a good performance on their part as well,” Dunham said.

The final regular season meet of the outdoor track and field season is next Saturday in Monmouth, Illinois at the Fighting Scot Invitational hosted by Monmouth College.

“It’s just a tune-up meet for us at Monmouth,” Dunham said. “It’s an opportunity for everyone to get ready before we have the big meet at home in two weeks. I’m looking forward to seeing where we are at.”
