Oskaloosa, Iowa – Disc golfers can often be seen taking on the course at Edmundson nearly all year long. That dedication to sport and community is what helped.

The group spread out all across Oskaloosa, asking businesses and others to help sponsor the upcoming event. Those prizes were used to help entice disc golfers from far and wide to come and participate.

Michael Anderson and Seane San worked together to make the fundraiser come together, with the goal of helping the Mahaska County Homelessness Coalition help others.

The money raised came from 100% of the entry fees, and along with raffle ticket sales made up the $2039.00 they donated last week.

Besides Edmundson Park, the tournament also played the new disc golf course at University Park, which recently opened after additional trail was installed. “Its nice little short holes. A beginner course is pretty much what it is,” explained San of the new course.

The 27 teams, comprising of 54 players made up the tournament. “I was very happy with it,” said Anderson of the turnout for the fundraiser tournament.

Raising $2000 was a goal of San and Anderson. “Very surprising and glad that we did hit it,” explained San.

The donation surprised the homelessness coalition. The group often struggles to find enough cash to help the homeless in Oskaloosa and Mahaska County.

The group also holds another event during the year, which is called ‘The Chili Bowl’. Last year, the money raised from that event went towards Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Mahaska County.

No plans are made yet to repeat the latest tournament, but Anderson and San said they will have the discussion about continuing the tournament into the future “to keep them guys funded.”

Both men agree that most everyone involved in disc golf is friendly and welcoming and want to help bring in more players to the sport.

Both once again thanked the 29 local businesses that helped to support the effort to raise money to put on the tournament. “They pretty much made this event happen.”
