Dennis Sampson, 69 of New Sharon, passed away Thursday, January 18, 2018 at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics in Iowa City. Dennis Henry Sampson, the son of Luvois and Violet (Gabel) Sampson, was born on July 7, 1948 in Cherokee, Iowa.

He was a 1966 graduate of Aurelia High School in Aurelia, Iowa.

On June 23, 1968, Dennis was united in marriage to Mary Ann Miller at the Aurelia United Methodist Church. To this union three children were born: Wendy, Todd and Chris.

Following their marriage, they moved to Omaha and Dennis attended the University of Nebraska.

In 1975, they relocated to New Sharon when Dennis took a job at Clow Valve Company in Oskaloosa. Dennis worked there for a number of years before retiring as the shipping manager in 1992 due to health.

Dennis was one of the first five successful Liver transplants in the state of Iowa. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather, and was very proud of his family and attended all of his children’s and grandchildren’s activities.

Dennis enjoyed golfing, fishing, camping, bowling and traveling. Dennis and Mary Ann had the opportunity to go on a six week trip to Alaska for their 40th wedding anniversary. Dennis and Mary Ann enjoyed playing cards and once a month they hosted a Blackjack party at Stonehenge in Oskaloosa.

Dennis was an active member of the New Sharon United Methodist Church where he was involved with Bible study, teaching Sunday School, adult Sunday School and had been involved in cleaning the church and McVay Center for over 20 years. Dennis was also a member of the Prairie Knolls Country Club, a past member of the New Sharon Jaycees and the North Mahaka Booster Club. Dennis served two terms on the North Mahaska School Board and was instrumental in getting the new grade school.

His memory will be cherished by his wife of nearly 50 years, Mary Ann of New Sharon; his three children: Wendy Sampson of New Sharon, Todd (& Shelly) Sampson of New Sharon and Chris (& Elaine) Sampson of New Sharon; 15 grandchildren: Kate Ray, Jake Bortell, Nate Sampson, Cali Sampson, Cooper Sampson, John Mindrup, Lily Mindrup, Katelyn Mindrup, Brieanna (& Elijah) O’Lear, Caitlin Sampson, Jacob Sampson, Morgan Sampson, Emily Sampson, Colby Sampson and Anna Sampson; a brother, Dwight Sampson of Kansas City; a sister, Karen (& Mark) Covey of Morrison, CO; a brother-in-law, Alvin DeForest of Lyons, GA; his parents-in-law, Bob and Carol Miller of Oskaloosa; two sisters-in-law: Joyce (& Steve) Adams of Atlantic and Sue (& Lee) Anderson of Bayard; and many other nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and friends.

Dennis was preceded in death by his parents, Luvois and Violet Sampson; and five siblings.

As was his wish, his body has been cremated.
Memorial services will begin at 11:00 am Monday, January 22, 2018 at the New Sharon United Methodist Church.
Visitation will be held Sunday, January 21, 2018 at the New Sharon United Methodist Church with the doors open at 2:00 pm and the family present from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in the family’s name to determine a memorial at a later time.
