Debra L. Mason, 58, of Oskaloosa, died Thursday, December 26, 2013, at the MHP Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa.

Debra was born October 29, 1955, in Oskaloosa, Iowa, the daughter of Earnest and Joan Ingraham Mason. She graduated from North Mahaska High School with the class of 1973. She furthered her education at William Penn College earning her teaching degree in 1977. Following graduation she taught junior high math in Trenton, Missouri, she later taught math at West Bend, Iowa.

Early in the 1980’s Debra moved back to Oskaloosa and worked as the office manager at the Oskaloosa Chamber of Commerce. She then took a position with the V.A. in Knoxville as a medical transcriptionist. She retired from the V.A. in Des Moines as a billing specialist in June of 2012, after 30 years of service.

Debra enjoyed attending her nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews’ events, spending time with her family, and playing Bingo. She also enjoyed traveling with her friends and co-workers. Debra looked forward to the Iowa State Fair every summer. She was a very active member of the Barnes City United Methodist Church, where she was currently serving as treasurer. She was also a lifelong member of the Barnes City American Legion Auxiliary.

Debra’s family includes her father Earnest Mason of Oskaloosa; a sister and her husband, Connie and David Sanders of Oskaloosa; a brother and his wife, Rodney and Sonya Mason of New Sharon; five nephews: Jason (& Tina) Sanders, Jaroed (& Jessica) Sanders, Jeff Sanders, Joshua (& Cassie) Mason, and Jesse (& Savanna) Mason; a niece: Kelsey (& Weslee) McMahan; great nieces and nephews, Sydney Sanders, Jordyn Sanders, Mason Sanders, Peyton Sanders, Paige Sanders, Elizabeth Mason, Oliver Mason, and Tripp McMahan; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and close friends.

Debra was preceded in death by her mother Joan Mason; her maternal and paternal grandparents; and many aunts and uncles.

Funeral services will be held Monday, December 30, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Reverends Michelle Williamson and David Pinkerton officiating.
Burial will be in the Barnes City Cemetery at Barnes City. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will begin Sunday morning after 11 at the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel from 1-3 Sunday afternoon to greet friends and relatives.
Memorials may be made to MHP Hospice Serenity House.
