Raymond Dale Veach, 89, of Oskaloosa and formerly of Rose Hill, died Monday, December 24, 2018, at the MHP Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa. He was born November 6, 1929, in Rockford, Illinois, the son of Clarence and Emma Pfannebecker Veach.

Dale attended country school in Keokuk County. Upon completing school, Dale went to work for area farmers.

In 1947, Dale entered the United States Army and served in the Korean War. Upon his honorable discharge from the Army, he returned to Keokuk County and worked as a mechanic as well as helping local farmers.

On December 5, 1953, he was united in marriage to Phyllis Robinson, at Ottumwa, Iowa. Phyllis died on January 31, 2013.

The majority of Dale’s working life was spent driving semi-truck, hauling grain for a farmer near Sigourney. He retired from that after 43 years.

In retirement he owned and operated a bar in Keswick and enjoyed scouring the countryside for scrap iron. He enjoyed looking for treasures in scrap piles, tinkering in the garage, gardening, and dancing. He was a member of the V.F.W., American Legion, and the Eagles Lodge in Oskaloosa. He always enjoyed sharing stories and refreshments with his friends. He also looked forward to having breakfast and visiting with all his friends at Hy-Vee.

His family includes his brother, Kermit (Marge) Veach of Kansas City, Missouri; a sister, Ruby Veach; an adopted son, Scott Kuntz of Oskaloosa; adopted granddaughter, Megan (& Duke) Carmer of Oskaloosa; and his close friends, Ronnie and Cheryl Ferree of Oskaloosa.

In addition to his wife, Dale was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters: Fern Tremmel, Leona West, and Velda Lippard; and a brother, Russell Veach.

Visitation will begin Friday, December 28, after 12 noon in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa. The family will be at the funeral chapel from 5-7 Friday evening to greet friends and relatives.
Military Honors will be given by members of the Oskaloosa American Legion and V.F.W. at 7 Friday evening. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
As was Dale’s wish, following visitation he will be cremated.
Memorials may be made to the Oskaloosa American Legion.
