Oskaloosa, Iowa | Age 84

D. Jim Moore, 84, of Oskaloosa and formerly of rural Thornburg passed away Wednesday evening, January 14, 2014, at the Oskaloosa Care Center in Oskaloosa.

David Jim Moore, son of Clair and Elizabeth (McKay) Moore was born, September 22, 1929, rural Thornburg. He was born in a house across the road from White Oak Church, the church he attended all his early years. Jim graduated from Thornburg High School in 1947 and then joined his father fulltime on the farm. September 22, 1949, Jim was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, Greta Lou McGimpsey at the Thornburg United Methodist Church. Jim Joined the Air Force in 1951; he was stationed in Texas and served for more than three years. He came home on a three day pass to purchase his first farm. To do this, he mortgaged everything but his wife and furniture, and this was because the banker wouldn’t let him. After his discharge, Jim returned to the farm and lived there until ill health required a move to the care center in 2012. In addition to farming, Jim also got his Real Estate License in 1961 and was a Realtor for many years.

Jim was over a fifty year Mason and Shiner and attended the White Oak Presbyterian Church. He served for several years on the Keokuk County Conservation Board. He was a Tri-County School board member and was serving as president of the board at the dedication of the new Tri-County School house in 1966.

Jim loved his family, farm and community, he invested his time and talents generously and wasn’t afraid to share his “wisdom” on how things should be done. He was a loving “Poppy” and so proud of Xan’s accomplishments and Jace’s athletic endeavors and service in the military. Although he knew he would not be there to see his youngest grandchildren grow up, he was thrilled to be “Poppy” to them as well.

Jim’s family includes his children: David Van (Peggy) Moore of Oskaloosa; Joy Lou Ann (Ron) Denison of Thornburg and James Ace (Meghan) Moore of Somerset, WI; grandchildren: Joy Dee Xan and her husband Mike Mooney of Wayne, WV; Jace Vance (Courtney) Denison of Olathe, KS and his “little” Moores: Xavier Ignatius, Cora Fallon, Finian Arthyr, Zelda Hyacinth and Lorcan Nollaig, all of Somerset, WI; his great grandchildren: Alexa Lou and Drake Michael Mooney; and his sister, Norma Gasperi of Des Moines.

In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by Greta Lou just three months prior to his death and a brother-in-law, Ray Gasperi.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, January 18, 2014, at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel with Pastor Hans Cornelder of the White Oak Presbyterian Church.
Burial will be in Sixteen Cemetery near Thornburg with Military Honors by the Oskaloosa Honor Guard.
Open visitation will be held Friday from noon – 6 p.m. Visitation with the family present will be from 1 p.m. to service time on Saturday.
Memorials may be made to the Shriner’s Hospital.
