Curtis L. Howard, 83, of Oskaloosa died Saturday, July 27, 2013, at Crystal Heights Care Center in Oskaloosa.

Curtis was born May 13, 1930, west of Lacey, Iowa, the son of Elvan “Russ” and Edith L. Bishop Howard. He served in the United States Air Force from 1951-1955. On December 10, 1955, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Davis at Lancaster, Missouri. Dorothy died on February 11, 2011. Curtis was a body and fender repair man his entire working career. He started his career at the O.K. body shop in Oskaloosa, and after 5 years there he went to work for Green’s Ford and Carriker Ford. He worked at Ford for 26 years, retiring in 1989.

Curtis was a 57 year member of the Mahaska Lodge (formerly Council Lodge) #644, a 65 year member of the Eagles Lodge, and a longtime member of the V.F.W. and the American Legion. Curtis was a former member of the Kaaba Shrine. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He also enjoyed helping restore classic cars.

His family includes, 3 daughters: Bonnie Ongna of Oskaloosa, Linda (& Dick) Reese of Shell Knob, Missouri, and Vicki (& Jim) Barnett of Oskaloosa; 5 grandchildren: Jodie (& Mike) Seitz, Greg (& Peg) Ongna, Andy Albertson, Shelli (& Dwight) Teeter, Jamie (& Pat) Nienkerk; 12 great grandchildren: Drew, Colby, and Kade Ongna, Rachel Seitz, Andrew, Bailey, and Levi Albertson, Wyatt and Mason Teeter, Kierstyn, Hayden, and Isaac Nienkerk; two sisters: Karen (& Ed) Smith of Slidell, Louisiana and Lavoe Worrall of Gravois Mills, Missouri; his aunt, Ila Vehmeier (& Hiram Muse) of Alamogordo, New Mexico; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, Curtis was preceded in death by his parents; a son in law, Rodney Ongna; a grandson, Steven Ongna; a sister, Vivian Howard; and a brother, Royden Howard.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 31, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Pastor Alvern Boetsma officiating.
Burial will be in the Friends Cemetery at New Sharon. Graveside military rites will be given by members of the Oskaloosa American Legion and V.F.W. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will begin Tuesday morning after 11 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel from 5:30 – 7:30 Tuesday evening to greet friends and relatives. Masonic rites will be given at 7:30 in the Bates Funeral Chapel.
Memorials may be made to Crystal Heights Care Center Activity Fund or to the donor’s choice.
