Culver trails Branstad in new Des Moines Register poll

According to a new poll by the Des Moines Register, if the election were to be held today, Terry Branstad would be our new governor. The poll conducted by the Register’s pollster, Selzer and Co, targeted 803 Iowan adults from all parts of the state. The poll was conducted from September 19-22. To Culver, it looks like he may have some serious trouble, however this poll does not mean that the election is over.

At this point in 1998 governor campaign, Democrat candidate Tom Vilsack was trailing Republican Jim Ross Lightfoot by nearly this much. On election day in 1998, Tom Vilsack defeated Lightfoot by 3% of the vote. This does not mean that Culver will come back from behind to win though. This same poll indicated that only 35% approve of how Culver is doing his job. Those also polled indicated that most do not necessarily like their candidate but that “it is more a case of disliking the other guy more”.

The election will take place on November 2nd.
