City Council Sets Pubic Hearing For Budget

Oskaloosa, Iowa – The Oskaloosa City Council met in regular session on February 4th, 2019.
The council heard from Sherry Vavra with Mahaska County Recreation Foundation (MCRF), who presented the annual report.
The new roadways leading into the complex are mostly completed, and the ‘Sun Dome’ project has been started.
Vavra said that it costs approximated $800,000 to operate MCRF and its facilities. A large portion of its funding comes from donors and volunteers. “MCRF can’t do without the volunteers,” Vavra said, sharing that approximately 10,000 hours were volunteered last year to the organization.
Vavra said that there were about 70,000 participants at the facilities during the past year. Some of those participants may be in multiple sports and use the facility numerous times during the year. “We’re seeing a lot of traffic,” Vavra added.
Passed was the first reading of the “Building Materials and Design Standards” ordinance amending Oskaloosa Municipal Code. This was the first reading.
Also passed was an ordinance amending Oskaloosa Municipal Code to add two 15-minute parking stalls on High Avenue West. This was the second reading.
The council passed a resolution adopting the proposed 2018-2019 budget amendment, and the proposed 2019-2020 budget, setting the hearing date for March 4th, 2019 during the city council meeting. The tax rate would be set at $13.9709 per $1000 of assessed valuation. This is an increase of 0.18988 or 1.36 percent from the previous budget year.
The council also approved a resolution scheduling the date for a public hearing and authorizing the opening of bids for the Phase 3 Sanitary Sewer System Improvements Project.
The preliminary engineering cost for the base bid is $2,541,233 for contract one, while the other is expected to be approximately $1,217,088 for contract two.
There could be additional costs, depending upon how low or high the bids come in on the two contracts.
The council then went into closed session to discuss a legal matter.
The next scheduled meeting is set for February 18th, at 6 pm in the council chambers of the Oskaloosa City Hall.
