Charles D. Place

Charles D. Place, 80, of Oskaloosa, died Wednesday, May 30, 2012, at Crystal Heights Care Center in Oskaloosa. He was born September 4, 1931, at Gallatin, Missouri, the son of Minor E. and Marie Gray Place. He graduated from the Lineville High School at Lineville, Iowa, with the class of 1949. Following graduation he enlisted in the United States Air Force, he was honorably discharged on September 27, 1954. Following his military service he returned to Iowa, moved to Des Moines, and worked various jobs. On August 31, 1956, he was united in marriage to Marva Johnson at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. In the late 1950’s Charlie went to work as a salesman for Mid States Distributing in Des Moines, he retired from there in 1996. Early on, he enjoyed coaching his sons’ little league teams and traveling. He also enjoyed fishing, playing Cribbage, and attending his grandchildren’s activities. He was also a St. Louis Cardinals fan. He was a member of the Oskaloosa American Legion.

He is survived by his wife Marva Place of Oskaloosa; three sons, Robert (& Nancy) Place of Oskaloosa, Rick (& Joyce) of Pella, and Rory Place of Oskaloosa; nine grandchildren, Jessica (& Zach) Flaherty, Jeremy (& Jaime) Place, Trenton Place, Dameon (& Lindsay) Place, Ryan (& Libby) Place, Joe Place, Andy Place, Chris Clark, and Jody (& Matt) Vermeer; seven great grandchildren, Tyler and Grace Vermeer, Ali and Bentley Flaherty, Drew Place, “Little” Charlie Place, and Henry Place; his mother in law, Edna Johnson of Oskaloosa; sisters in law, Mary Grace Marshall of Des Moines and Sandra (& Marvin) Munyon of Watertown, Wisconsin; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister in infancy, Esther Place; two brothers and their wives, Russell “Glen” (Jean) and Robert (Marjorie) Place; his father in law, Marvin Johnson; two brothers in law, Vernon Johnson and Dwight Marshall; and two nephews, Chuck Place and Gary Johnson.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, June2, 2012, at 1:30 p.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Marvin Munyon officiating. Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery, with graveside military rites given by members of the Oskaloosa American Legion and V.F.W. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation will begin Friday morning after 10 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel from 6—8 Friday evening to greet friends and relatives. Memorials may be made to the Crystal Heights Care Center Activity Fund.
