Oskaloosa, Iowa – The aircraft weren’t the only things flying at the Oskaloosa Municipal Airport on Sunday, as members from the Iowa Region SCCA hit the tarmac chasing the clock.

The Iowa Region SCCA club was founded back in 1952 and currently has about 118 members. There is a total of 3 regions in Iowa, and Luke McKee of Oskaloosa is a member of the Des Moines Valley Region SCCA.

The SCCA or Sports Car Club of America was founded in 1944 and according to their website has championed one mission: “To bring motorsports to the masses of American men and women who are passionate about automobiles, speed and competition.”

Iowa Region SCCA Regional Executive Mike Holzinger said that ” Anyone can join and bring just about any type of car out and race.”

All of the racing is solo, so you race the clock and not another competitor. This helps prevent damage to the automobiles.

” We had 42 drivers racing today. We had one guy race today and it was his first time ever and he had a blast,” said Holzinger.

For those thinking of taking your favorite ride to the track to see how it stacks up, it just might be easier than you think. Holzinger explained that new participants only need three things in order to participate. The first is a a valid driver’s license. The second is a helmet, but the club will even help you out there by providing a loaner helmet. Lastly, Holzinger said that having fun is also important.

The cost to participate is $25.00 for a SCCA member or $40.00 for a weekend member. The club fee is $80.00 a year.
