Certified Stage Combat Teacher to Lead Stage Combat Workshops

Stage Combat Instruction

OSKALOOSA, IA— Stage combat workshops are to be offered at the George Daily Auditorium over the next few weeks. Stage combat expert from the University of Iowa, Jason Tipsword, will lead the workshops.

Over the past seven years, Jason Tipsword has worked with the George Daily Youth Camps and the Auditorium on various projects. This summer is no different, as he is bringing two stage combat workshops for teens and adults to Oskaloosa.

The first workshop, Workshop I: Storytelling Violence on Stage, will be held July 22nd-July 25th from 7:00-9:00 p.m. This workshop prepares actors to portray moments of conflict, chaos, and combat in front of a live audience. This includes the basic techniques for unarmed combat and some knife work with a focus on safety, partnering, and storytelling.

The second session, Workshop II: Swordplay for the Stage, will be held the following week, July 29th-August 1st from 7:00-9:00 p.m. Students in this workshop will learn basic techniques and skills for telling stories of deadly duels and swashbuckling daring-do. While this is an acting class and not a martial arts class, it includes an exploration of the martial intent and efficacy of these historical forms of fighting in a safe and theatrically effective way.

Jason Tipsword is a SAFD Certified Stage Combat Teacher. SAFD is the society of American Fight Directors and is the industry standard in fight choreography and stage combat certification. He has been a Guest Teacher with the Youth Theatre, instructing campers on the basics of stage combat including techniques in hand-to-hand combat and fencing during camps like Hunger Games, and the Three Musketeers, and Macbeth. He was also involved in Home Again last year as a set design consultant and performer.

Both workshops are open to anyone 14 and older. Each workshop costs $60, but it is $100 to attend both workshops. For more information about these workshops, or to register, please contact Andy McGuire at 641-672-3795 or via email at youth@georgedaily.org.
