CEDAR RAPIDS—The Central College wrestling team’s Tyler Lowry (junior, Phoenix, Ariz., Thunderbird HS) pulled out a tiebreaker win against a ranked opponent at a dual against No. 8 Coe College Thursday night, but it wasn’t enough to upset the Kohawks in a 33-10 loss.

“All in all the score wasn’t indicative of how well the team wrestled,” said coach Eric Van Kley. “There were times when we were close, but we gave up bonus points.”

Lowry came up with Central’s final win at 197 pounds against No. 9 Donnie Horner in a tiebreaker, 3-2.

“Tyler really wrestled well and battled,” Van Kley said. “His match was the highlight of the night.”

Daniel Page (junior, Tumwater, Wash.)—ranked No. 5 in a recent National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III poll—led the team in the lightweight match. Page started the night off with a 14-1 major decision at 125 pounds. Central (0-1) found itself only down 8-7 before a string of Coe (2-0, 1-0 conference) wins clinched the match for the Kohawks. TJ Peretti (senior, Auburn, Wash, Mountainview HS) scored Central’s second win with a 9-7 decision at 149. Coe claimed wins at the remaining weights.

“Our three wins came from our upperclassmen which really shows strong leadership,” said Van Kley. “Tyler, Daniel and TJ were attacking offensively and getting good points. It’s a big positive for the team to have such strong upperclassmen.”

Van Kley also cited nice performances from the underclassmen.

“It is a challenging situation for freshmen to be in,” he said. “We had three freshmen compete that did well, and I absolutely see them improving throughout the year.”

Central has just two days before traveling to Minneapolis, Minn., Saturday for the Augsburg Invitational. The meet begins at 9 a.m.
