PELLA—The Central College wrestling team came out firing Friday evening, rolling up a 41-6 victory over Iowa Conference rival Simpson College.

“All and all it was a solid effort,” said coach Eric Van Kley. “We had great starts at 133 and 141 pounds and we finished well at 197 and 285 pounds. Those were really the highlights of the night.”

After a Simpson forfeit at 125 pounds, freshman Aaron Anderson (Clarion, Clarion-Goldfield HS) captured a pin in 2:05 at 133 pounds. TJ Peretti (junior, Auburn, Wash., Mountainview HS) followed with a victory by technical fall at 141 pounds, 15-0. Anderson improved to 22-6 while Peretti jumped to 14-7.

“Anytime you can start out with a bonus it gives the entire team a boost,” Van Kley said. “Aaron had a great pin and TJ with the technical fall right at the start helped us get that momentum.”

At the end of the lineup, Theron Stewart (senior, Marshalltown) won by fall at 197 pounds in 1:46 while Jake Crawford (senior, Monroe, Southeast Polk HS) also snagged a fall at 285, getting the pin in 1:11.

“Seniors Stewart and Crawford did well,” Van Kley said. “It’s nice to know you can count on your seniors to get the pins the team needs.”

Van Kley also highlighted Greg Barner (senior, Audubon), who won by a 10-5 decision at 174 to put the Dutch ahead 26-6.

“Barner really stepped it up,” he said. “He had a big win for us and as a senior, that’s really nice to see.”

The Dutch (11-5) locked up the sixth seed for the Iowa Conference dual finals. Central will battle Loras College (7-12) at Dubuque for fifth place in the league. Central closes its regular season tomorrow against No. 23 Luther College (9-7) at P.H. Kuyper Fieldhouse in Pella at 3:30 p.m.
