Central stumbles at Cornell in men’s tennis action

MOUNT VERNON—Unable to pull out victories in close matches, the Central College men’s tennis team suffered a 6-3 setback to Cornell College Saturday in Mount Vernon.

Sophomore Bryn Boswell (Pella) picked up two wins for the Dutch, taking a 6-2, 6-3 victory in No. 3 singles before pairing up with senior Jacob Dreyer (Cedar Falls) at No. 2 doubles in an 8-6 triumph. Senior Dan Bowser (Fort Dodge) also won, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 1 singles.

“Those players came out and took care of business,” coach Steve Tyler said. “Unfortunately we didn’t come out and play at the other positions.”

Freshman Kyle Freischlag (Downers Grove, Downers Grove South HS) battled at No. 4 singles before falling in a three-set match and junior Seth Harris (Waverly, Neb., Waverly HS) had a strong showing at No. 2 singles before slipping in a tiebreaker.

“We’re playing with everyone but we’re just not beating them,” Tyler said. “We’re very capable but we need to reflect and work on how to win those close ones.”

Tyler also gave credit to the Rams (5-5).

“You’ve got to hand it to Cornell,” Tyler said. “When they needed shots they came up with them. That was the difference.”

The Dutch (3-7) travel to Grinnell Saturday, facing Carroll Univ. (Wis.) at 12:30 p.m. before tackling Grinnell College at 4 p.m.
