Central student-athletes receive academic awards from conference

PELLA — The spring sports American Rivers Conference all-academic team was announced Thursday and 37 Central College student-athletes were honored for their academic and athletic excellence.

Central’s baseball team led the way with 12 honorees. Both the men’s and women’s track and field teams had seven selections while the softball and men’s tennis programs had five apiece. The men’s golf also had one honoree.

Eight student-athletes were recognized for the third time. Baseball had a trio of three-time honorees in Zach Greder (senior, Sloan, Westwood HS), Garrett Saunders (senior, Bonaparte, Van Buren HS) and Tanner Wood (senior, Pella) and Kylie Olson (senior, Mapleton, Minn., Maple River HS) represented the softball team. Men’s tennis players Josh Phillips (senior, Morton, Ill.) and Collin Jones (senior, Pella), women’s track and field runner Rachel Peter (senior, Prairie City, PCM HS) and men’s track and field runner Kyle Pape (senior, Dubuque, Wahlert Catholic HS) also picked up the award for the third time.

To qualify for the distinction, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore in academic standing with one year at his/her current school, achieve a 3.5 GPA or better and be on the team’s eligibility list.
