Central starts men’s outdoor track season in national rating index

NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA — The Central College men’s track and field squad will open the season at No. 21 after the USTFCCCA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Preseason National Team Rating Index was released on Tuesday.

Will Daniels (junior, Geneseo, Ill.) placed third in the decathlon last year at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships and has the top returning mark entering 2019 (6,793 points). His high jump of 6 feet, 11 inches is the No. 4 mark entering the season.

Thrower Nathan Fitzgerald (senior, Elkader, Central HS) cracks the top-30 in both the discus throw and shot put. He’s No. 20 in the discus (158-11.5) and No. 23 in the shot put (51-4.25)

Kyle Pape (senior, Dubuque, Wahlert HS) has the No. 26 returning mark in the 800-meter run, a time of 1:52.88 from April 20 at the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, California.

Daniels was the national champion at the indoor national meet a few weeks ago and Pape was 13th in the 800-meter run.

North Central College (Ill.), University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, University of Mount Union (Ohio), Redlands University (Calif.) and Pomona-Pitzer (Calif.) make up the top-five teams in the country.

Central opens the outdoor season next weekend with the Washington University Invitational on March 29 in St. Louis and the Vikings Olympics in Rock Island on March 30.
