Central lands three league basketball picks

PELLA—For the second straight year, senior Demarco Turner (Des Moines, East HS) is a first-team all-Iowa Conference men’s basketball selection.

Turner is among three Dutch athletes receiving league honors. Junior Jacob Winkler (Lancaster, Mo., Schuyler R-1 HS) and senior Sarah Paulson (Ottumwa) are second-team picks.

A 5-10 guard, Turner led the squad averaging 12.9 points per game. He also had 52 assists and 33 steals. Turner’s 67 made 3-point field goals rank second in the league and third on Central’s all-time charts. His 190 attempts from long distance is a school record.

On Central’s career leaderbaords, Turner is third in made 3-point field goals (148), fourth in 3-point attempts (383) and fifth in free throw percentage (83.5).A three-year letterwinner, Turner received league player of the week recognition twice in his career and was tabbed last year’s team MVP.

Winkler, a 6-5 forward, came off the bench to average 10.5 points per game and a team-high 6.8 rebounds per game, ranking eighth in the league. He also dished 57 assists, 10th in the conference, and 24 blocks, seventh in the league. Winkler posted four double-doubles and received league player of the week distinction Feb. 13.

A 5-8 guard, Paulson led the women’s squad averaging 12.4 points per game, ranking 11th in the league, and seven rebounds per game, ninth in the league. She also had 40 assists and 48 steals. Paulson received honorable mention last year and is a two-time academic all-conference choice.
