PELLA — The left side of the Central College infield, senior shortstop Annie Sarcone (Des Moines, Dowling Catholic HS) and junior third baseman Whitney Sowers (Marshalltown), are again on the all-Iowa Conference softball team.

Both were first-team choices after being second-team picks a year ago. It’s the fourth appearance for Sarcone, who was also a first-team pick in 2011 and 2012 as well as the league’s position player of the year in 2012. Sowers was honored for the third time. She was a second-team honoree in 2012.

The rest of the Dutch infield joined them. Junior first baseman Kaitlyn Matzen (Manly, Central Springs HS), junior second baseman Abbey Strajack (Davenport, Assumption HS) and junior catcher Katie Canney (Adel, ADM HS) were second-team honorees. Canney was a second-team pick as a first baseman last year while Strajack was a first-team selection in 2012 before missing nearly the entire league season with injury in 2013.

Meanwhile, designated player Karlee Rock (junior, Wheatland, Calamus-Wheatland HS) received honorable mention.

In 14 league games, Sarcone batted .381 with three homers, four doubles and 13 RBIs. Sowers, who missed two games with injury and was limited to a pinch-hitting appearance in another, hit .333 and played errorless defense while helping make three double plays.

Matzen hit .417 with three homers and 10 RBIs. Canney batted .395 with three homers and 14 RBIs and Strajack hit .370 with seven RBIs and 10 runs scored while stealing four bases.

Rock hit .333 with one home run and five RBIs.

Central, 30-10 overall, was 10-4 in league play, tying for second place. The Dutch were awarded their 26th NCAA Division III tournament berth and will play host to a four-team regional Friday through Sunday.
