Central hosts winter baseball clinic

PELLA — The Central College baseball team is hosting a winter clinic Thursday and Friday, Dec. 27-28, to benefit players of all ages in every aspect of the game.

The clinic is held in two sessions each day. Day one covers defensive skills and pitching while day two offers hitting instruction and baserunning. The morning session is 9 a.m. to noon for ages 7-12 and the afternoon session is 1-4 p.m. for ages 13-18.

Registration information can be found online at www.central.edu/athletics/camps. The cost is $70 for both days or $40 for one day and includes a camp t-shirt. Deadline for registration is Dec. 15.

On day one participants will learn drills for year-round practice, proper fielding, throwing and pitching mechanics and strength and conditioning programs for pitchers.

Day two offers hitting instruction and baserunning. Material covered includes hitting drills for year-round practice, instruction of proper hitting mechanics, bunting and baserunning instruction and speed and strengthening programs for hitters.

Participants will need a glove and hat and must wear tennis or gym shoes. Catchers must provide their own equipment.

The school will be led by Dutch head coach Adam Stevens with Central players and staff. Stevens, a two-time Iowa Conference coach of the year and last year’s D3baseball.com all-region coach of the year, piloted Central to the 2012 league championship. The Dutch racked up a school record 29 victories in 40 games last season and Stevens’ squads have averaged nearly 22 wins in nine seasons.

The camp will be held at H.S. Kuyper Fieldhouse. The facility houses four indoor batting cages, indoor pitching mounds and a full indoor field.

Winter hitting school offered—Registration is also continuing for the new five-week Central College Championship Hitting School for area baseball players.

The school will be conducted in H.S. Kuyper Fieldhouse December 2 and 9, January 20 and 27 and February 10. Sessions for players age 9-13 will be held from 4-5:30 p.m. with players age 14-18 participating from 5:30-7 p.m.

The hitting school will feature both individual and group hitting instruction and individual video swing analysis, along with instruction on bunting, count hitting, plate discipline, strike zone knowledge, hitting drills and preparation tips.

Cost is $125 for more than 7 hours of instruction. Players who sign up with three teammates receive $10 off per player and hitting school participants also receive discounted rates for the Central Baseball Holiday Clinic Dec. 27-28.
