Central decathletes kick off Drake Relays week
DES MOINES—Central College combined-events specialists Ethan Miller (junior, Seymour) and Kurtis Brondyke (senior, Clinton) kicked off a big week at the Drake Relays track and field meet Wednesday with a strong showing in first day of the decathlon.
Miller is the leader after five events after accumulating a personal-best 3,860 points while Brondyke is currently seventh with 3,577 points in the in the 14-competitor field comprised primarily of Division I and post-collegiate athletes.
Miller recorded marks of 10.94 seconds in the 100 meter dash, 23 feet, 0.75 inches in the long jump, 37-3 in the shot put, 6-7 in the high jump, and 50.64 in the 400 meters. The 100 meter, 400 meter, and shot put marks all represented lifetime bests for Miller. Meanwhile, Brondyke recorded marks of 11.35 in the 100 meters, 20-10 in the long jump, 38-4.75 in the shot put, 6-4.75 in the high jump, and 50.7 in the 400 meters.
The decathlon competition will resume Thursday at 9:30 a.m. The Dutch will also send a partial squad to the Kip Janvrin Open at Simpson College in Indianola to contest the discus and hammer throw and is slated to begin 2 p.m.
