Central College will explore a “decision science” curriculum in the hopes of preparing students for an evolving world of business, driven by support from a locally based, globally active business.

Precision Pulley & Idler (PPI), a Pella-based manufacturing company, has awarded a planning grant of $50,000 to Central College to research and develop curriculum in decision science that includes artificial intelligence, analytics and digital transformation, according to a news release.

This curriculum will span and connect different departments within the college and touch on areas including math, computer science, business and more. Mary Strey, vice president for academic affairs at Central College, said in an email there are elements of decision science already present in certain teaching, and the grant will allow faculty to record these as part of a new program and possibly expand them into new courses.

“Central is so appreciative of its longstanding partnership with PPI,” Central College President Mark Putnam said in the release. “As we assess and anticipate the workforce needs for the next generation, the PPI planning grant will support faculty and industry experts as we explore what a decision science curriculum could become. Partnerships with industry leaders like PPI forge the path for the future of Central.”

According to the news release, this funding will allow programming to address shifting workplaces, new technologies and other changes in businesses and consumers.

“PPI is proud to support Central as they continue to enhance their offerings to students that we feel will have an impact on businesses now and in the future,” said Leslie Johnston, PPI vice president of human resources, in the release.
