Carolyn Joyce Veldhuizen, 80, of Oskaloosa, died Friday, March 22, 2019, at her son Lyle’s home in Milan, Michigan. She was born August 20, 1938, in Mahaska County, the daughter of Joseph and Bertha Hoksbergen Van Haaften.
At a young age Carolyn’s Life was dedicated to the Lord, and at the age of 13 became a member of Central Reformed Church in Oskaloosa.
Carolyn attended school in Oskaloosa and graduated from Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1956. She continued her education at Central College in Pella and earned her B.A. from there in Education.
On September 7, 1956, Carolyn was united in marriage to Elmer Veldhuizen at the Central Reformed Church in Oskaloosa. To this union four children were born, Lyle, Evan, Leon, and Owen. Elmer and Carolyn let the Lord guide their life.
Carolyn was a teacher in the Oskaloosa Community School District. She also taught overseas while the two of them served in the mission field specifically in Manama, Bahrain.
Carolyn was an active member of Central Reformed Church in Oskaloosa where she was very involved in teaching Bible studies. She enjoyed seeking God everyday in everything she did. Her mission in life was to share the Gospel to as many people as she could and show God’s Love to those around; especially to her pupils in the classroom.
She is survived by her husband of over 62 years Elmer Veldhuizen, formerly of Oskaloosa; four sons: Lyle (& Bonnie) Veldhuizen of Milan, Michigan, Evan (& Carol) Veldhuizen of North Canton, Ohio, Leon (& Catherine) Veldhuizen of Wausau, Wisconsin, Owen (& Nerys) Veldhuizen of Llandudno, Wales, U.K.; thirteen grandchildren: Jennifer (& Issac) Gale, Rebekah (& Kurt) Heinold, Timothy (& Gretchen) Veldhuizen, Lori Veldhuizen, Melissa (& Martell) Hardy, Chris Veldhuizen, Detric Veldhuizen, Chene Veldhuizen, Cory (& Kimberly) Veldhuizen, Tyler (& Arliss) Veldhuizen, Kelsey Veldhuizen, Jacob Veldhuizen, and Joshua Veldhuizen; seven great-grandchildren: Levi Veldhuizen, Caden Veldhuizen, Karalyn Veldhuizen, Avery Hardy, Willow Veldhuizen, Claire Veldhuizen, and Corynna Veldhuizen; two brothers, Ronald Van Haaften of rural Oskaloosa and Marvin (& Barbara) Van Haaften of rural Oskaloosa; many nieces and nephews; and “a daughter of her heart”, Debbie Bible of Oskaloosa.
Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Darrell Van Haaften; and “a daughter of her heart”, Kim Kiefer.
Funeral Services will be held Friday, March 29, 2019 at 10:30 am in the Central Reformed Church in Oskaloosa with Reverend Jon Nelson officiating.
A prayer service will begin at 10:15 in the East Lounge of the church, prior o the service.
Burial will be in Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will begin Thursday after 12 noon in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be present from 5-7 pm to greet friends and relatives.
