Candidates Set For June Primary
Oskaloosa, Iowa – The 2014 election is months away, but the process of selecting tomorrows leaders will take a big step on June 3rd when voters whittle the field of candidates down.
Locally, in Mahaska County there are 4 candidates for two county supervisor seats currently held by Greg Gordy and Mark Doland. Gordy didn’t file papers to run for election under a party, but Doland filed and will be on the ballot as a Republican. Jeff Foster will be the lone candidate on the Democrat ticket, which will give Mahaska County voters at least three options for the two seats come November.

Running for Mahaska County Treasurer is Sone Scott, a Democrat. She is the lone candidate for the position and she has no Republican contender.
For Mahaska County Recorder, Diane Upton Crookham is also a lone candidate, and has no opposition from the Democrats.
Mahaska County Attorney Charles Stream was appointed in 2013 to fill the unexpired term of Roseanne Mefford who was appointed a District Judge. At the time of his appointment, he informed the Mahaska County Supervisors he would not run for reelection, and his name is not among those who turned in signatures for the position.
Amy Zenor, a Republican is the only candidate who is on the ballot for that position, as no Democrat is challenging her.
In the local Iowa House Districts, both Republicans Guy Vander Linden and Larry Sheets have no primary contenders. There is currently no Democrats signed up to square off against the incumbents, but that can change with a special convention for the November election.

In the State of Iowa, the federal off-year election is filled with the major state office elections. The big prize for both parties is the Governors Office, U.S. House Seats and Senate seats.
Tom Harkin (D) announced his retirement this past year, and Republican’s have been lining up to fill the Senate chair held by Harkin for nearly 30 years. Bruce Braily, a Democrat that now serves in the U.S. House of Representatives hopes he is victorious over his yet unknown Republican contender and help his party maintain control of the U.S. Senate for the Democrats.
