Burgey Pins Three En Route to Crown

William Penn University Athletics

Des Moines–Eric Burgey (Fr., Easton, Pa., Easton HS) made easy work of winning the 149-pound weight class at the DuHawk Open hosted by Loras Saturday.

Burgey, who is now 26-1 and has won 26 matches in a row, won by fall in his first and second competitions before dropping Drew Salzman of Loras 8-2 to reach the finals.

He then pinned Joe Wood of Loras in a time of 1:25 to claim his third championship of the year (also won at Iowa Lakes CC and Central).

141-pounder Jason Mozley (Fr., Arlington, Texas, Martin HS) joined Burgey in the finals, pinning his first opponent in 4:16 and then winning 7-0 to reach the championship match where he was pinned in 4:55 by Tommy Glenn (Wisconsin-Unattached).  If there were one more person in the seven-person bracket, Mozley would have qualified for nationals (must have a minimum of eight competitors).

125-pounder Taylor Louie (Sr., West Covina, Calif., West Covina HS) and 184-pounder Chris Diaz (Jr., Montrose, Colo., Olathe HS) also won matches (both were 1-2) to place in the top five (Diaz was fourth, Louie was fifth).

Next: Penn travels to Baldwin City, Kan. Wednesday to face Baker in dual meet action at 6 p.m.
