The Montezuma Bravettes battled tough but came up short on the 50th Anniversary of Montezuma’s 6 on 6 title.

Des Moines, Iowa – The Montezuma Bravettes have a storied basketball heritage. In 1969, the Bravettes won the girls 6 on 6 title, solidifying their status in the history of basketball in Iowa.

Forward 50 years to 2019, and the Montezuma Bravettes were fighting to have their own legacy, but those dreams came to an end at the hands of West Hancock.

Before the matchup with West Hancock, the Bravettes squared off against CAM Anita. The Bravettes struggled the first half, but eventually pulled ahead to win 59-45 in the Class 1A quarterfinal.

The Bravettes were kept alive on the sharpshooting of Elise Boulton and Shelby Conger before the break, where the Blue and White lead 25-22 at the half.

It was all Bravettes after the break, as Wetering returned to the game. Wetering, an Iowa commit, put on a clinic at the end of the third quarter.

For Montezuma, Boulton finished with 13 points, while Conger scored nine, and Riley Gatton added eight more points. Gatton also had the quick hands, snagging seven steals and dishing out five assists.

Madison Gettler lead CAM with 19 points, while Zoey Baylor added 12 points.

Montezuma then faced West Hancock on Friday, the same team who had dispatched the Warhawks of North Mahaska.

Leerar lead the way for West Hancock as the Eagles soared past the Bravettes 59-50 to advance to the championship game.

The Bravettes rallied three times to overcome the early deficit.

Wetering led Montezuma with 14 points and nine rebounds, while Riley Gatton added 12 points.

The Bravettes finished their season 22-3.

In the Class 1A All-Tournament Team, Shateah Wetering was selected by the Iowa Girls Coaches Association.
