Branstad sworn in for record 5th term

Governor Branstad is sworn in to a 5th term as Iowa's Governor today by Mark Cady

Governor Terry Branstad started his 5th term as Iowa’s Chief Executive today in a ceremony held at Hy-Vee Hall in Des Moines.

Branstad took the oath of office at approximately 10:12 this morning with Iowa’s Chief Justice Mark Cady swearing him in. This was a role reversal for the two, as Branstad gave Cady the oath of office on 2 separate occasions in the past.

Branstad defeated the incumbent Democrat Governor Chet Culver in November, gaining the nod from Iowan’s to lead them for the next 4 years. He is starting his fifth term after serving Iowa as Governor once before from 1983 to 1999, when at that point he announced he would not seek another term as Governor.

Lt. Governor Kim Reynolds speaks to those in attendance after taking the oath of office.

When he left Terrace Hill and the Governors Office, he became the President of Des Moines University serving there for six years.

He is joined by, a relative newcomer to the State political environment, Kim Reynolds.

Reynolds was the former Clarke County Treasurer and President of the Iowa State Treasurers Association until 2008 when she was elected to the Iowa Senate. She was sworn in before Branstad as Iowa’s Lieutenant Governor by Chief Justice Cady as well.
