OSKALOOSA — On Saturday, May 6 from 9-11 a.m. at the Urban Park, the annual Bike Rodeo will be held for children in the community. Officials and volunteers from the Mahaska Health Partnership, MCG, Wyndell Campbell State Farm Insurance, Mahaska Wellness Coalition and the Oskaloosa Police Department are coming together to teach kids the importance of bike safety.

Studies have shown that the more involved the learner is, the greater the chance that learning will actually take place. When we are engaged as a learner, people have a much greater chance of succeeding.

Bicycling lends itself very well to active, hands-on, experimental learning. The three big causes of car and bike crashes for kids include: riding out of a driveway without stopping, failing to stop for stop signs and suddenly swerving without looking back.

Bicycle rodeos are on-bike activities in controlled environments that involve active learning under the supervision of local experts and public safety officials. By setting aside a day in May, during National Bike Month, events such as a Bike Rodeo can impact the children of the community by teaching them about basic bicycle rules and safety.

Make sure to attend the Bike Rodeo on Saturday, May 6. The event is free and children will have a chance to win one of two bikes! All attendees will receive a free bike light and enjoy some snacks. Bring the whole family to engage in bike safety!
