Bicycle Coalition Working on Downtown Bicycle Parking Plan

The Oskaloosa Bicycle Coalition will soon be approaching downtown businesses in hopes of involving them in the Downtown Bicycle Parking Plan. The coalition will be asking businesses and property owners on to consider donating $200 toward a bicycle rack. The coalition plans to apply for an MCCF grant to raise the remaining funds for the racks.
The bicycle racks will be similar to the ones located at City Hall and the Law Enforcement Center. The coalition hopes businesses who sign up have an emblem or symbol that they would like to incorporate into a bicycle rack.
“We want to use this opportunity to increase the parking for people who ride bikes downtown” said Dylan Mulfinger, Coalition member.
The Coalition wants to place at least two bicycle racks on each block in the downtown area. The bicycle racks are being made locally by Phillips Machine and Metal Fabrication. Participants in the project can pick between a single loop or a double loop bicycle rack.
“Through this project, we hope more people make the choice to bike downtown, and feel comfortable parking their bike while shopping or coming to downtown events,” said Jane Krutzfeldt, Coalition member.
The Oskaloosa Bicycle Coalition came together in October of 2014 and created the Walk, Run, Ride: Oskaloosa’s Active Transportation Plan. The plan was formally adopted by Oskaloosa City Council in April of 2015. The Bicycle Coalition is working to achieve the goals that are in the Active Transportation Plan.
