Oskaloosa, Iowa – The mission of the project is to openly read the Bible in each county in the State of Iowa.

The first reading took place back in 2016 after then Iowa Governor Terry Branstad signed a proclamation encouraging all Iowans to join in a 99 County Bible Reading Marathon, that was planned in front of all 100 Iowa Courthouses.

Since then, the project continues every year. This year it was once again held inside the more weather friendly confines of Penn Central Mall. The move was made after bad weather destroyed equipment used at the original courthouse reading.

Despite the rough weather, the group continued reading through the night.

Alice Menne says that the project was brought forward to Branstad by Ginny Caligiuri, Director of the Iowa Prayer Caucus. The first of the Bible readings took place in the rotunda of the Iowa Capitol building in Des Moines. It has since spread out across the state.

“It’s to be read in our regular tone of voice. It’s to be read out loud,” explained Menne.

Since the first year, the requirement to read through the night has been lifted, “it’s been changed to just daytime,” explained Menne.

The move to the mall was granted because it is a public space. “That’s why we’re here,” said Menne. “It proved to be a very good choice, and we’ve been very pleased.”

Also changed is the ability to have more than one person read the bible at a time, with several bringing their own personal Bible to read.

“God asked us to do it,” says Menne.
