Oskaloosa School Board – October 2017

Oskaloosa, Iowa – The Oskaloosa School Board met in regular session on Tuesday evening, October 10th at their new time of 6pm.

Oskaloosa Schools Superintendent Russ Reiter spoke about security issues in the district, citing the recent rash of closures at other districts due to threats.

Reiter said that the district’s student Infinite Campus portal is secure. “We are trying to be very cognizant of what’s going on. Who’s out there. If something does get sent to us, we have a process; our administrators and I sat down and talked about the process.”

Reiter said the conversations about how to handle a similar situation are ongoing.

The board approved the revised board policy 210.2, the first reading. The change reflected the time change for the board meeting, which will be held on the second Tuesday of each month, beginning at 6pm.

A second meeting of the board, if needed, would be on the fourth Tuesday of each month, at 6pm.

The board approved purchasing a HVAC Unit for George Daily Auditorium in the amount of $104,000 to Rawson Mechanical, with the additional options for the project bringing the total to $115,350.

One of those additional options that added to the total was for a quiet compressor for the system. This was done to help keep distractions down during performances.

The board tabled the agenda item of Consider Accepting Bids and Award Contract for Softball Grandstand until the October 24th meeting.

The board accepted a contract in the amount of $221,800 from RJ Lumber LLC out of Bloomfield. The company was tapped to harvest marked trees east of the high school complex.

The board will discuss at a future date where to best utilize that one-time money generated from the tree harvest.

The board then considered the purchase of used school buses for the district. Superintendent Russ Reiter had no recommendations for the board based upon his concern over the cost of the used buses.

Reiter said he would like to potentially buy a new bus, which could potentially be ordered by November and delivered as soon as January of 2018.

The next scheduled meeting of the Oskaloosa School Board is October 24th, 2017 at 6pm at the George Daily Auditorium Boardroom.
