Oskaloosa, Iowa – What is AAUW? Those initials usually mean book sale time at Penn Central Mall.

The American Association of University Women or AAUW is a national orginization that held its first meeting back in 1881, which now boasts 170,000 members and supporters across the United States.

The mission statement for AAUW is “AAUW advances equality for women and girls though advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research”.

The local branch of AAUW recently held a meet and greet at the Oskaloosa Art Center, where members were able to share more about the group with those interested in potentially joining the non-profit group.

Briana Bartlett, a member of the local AAUW, stated that meetings are normally held the 3rd Tuesday of the month at 7:00pm at Smokey Row. The location does change from time to time, so you can check with the group via their Facebook page to find out more.

This year is also the 50th year for the AAUW annual book sale. “This year we partnered with the Friends of the Library Board to put on the sale. It will be held at Penn Central Mall on Oct 1, 2 and 3rd this year,” said Bartlett.
