Department of Homeland Security

The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) will be discussed in a public meeting on September 15th, 2010 at the Mahaska County Courthouse 3rd floor conference room. Officials from Mahaska County, representatives of the Department of Homland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Iowa Department of Natural Resources and FEMS’s flood mapping contractor, Stantec, Inc will be present. The meeting will be open to the public, and is set to begin at 1:00 PM. Those representing different aspects of the community are encouraged to attend, such as civic organizations, lending institutions and insurance companies, and property owners.

The National Flood Insurance Program is administered by FEMA, and once a flood prone community enters the insurance program, individual property owners will be eligible for the federally subsidized insurance program to better protect themselves from flooding loss. Topics for the meeting will include the new Mahaska County Flood Insurance Study (FIS), flood insurance and the FIS appeals process, as well as floodplain management. Interested parties will have the opportunity to learn and provide comments.
