Des Moines–The Statesmen women’s volleyball team squared off against the rival Grand View Vikings Friday in Heart of America Conference action.

William Penn played the number two nationally ranked Grand View well the first two sets but dropped the third and were swept by the conference foe (25-22, 25-19, 25-9).

WPU (10-5, 1-2 Heart) was outhit by the Vikings (11-0, 3-0 Heart) .255-.048

Jordan Carter (Sr., Sigourney, Iowa, Elementary Education) led the Statesmen with eight kills, hitting at a .115 clip while Alicia Jaquez (So., Farmington, N.M., Biology) was right behind her with seven kills. Alexis Weatherspoon (Sr., Kansas City, Mo., Physical Education) posted the best hitting percentage by any Statesmen with a .200 mark.

Elena Lucero (Fr., Yuba City, Calif., Political Science) was the only player for William Penn to break double-digits in assists, posting 12. Haley Smith (Sr., Adrian, Mich., Elementary Education) assisted on nine occasions while marking three digs.

Defensively, Belle Potter (Sr., Spokane, Wash., Undecided) paced the team with 11 digs while Ashley Miller (Sr., Kalona, Iowa, Exercise Science) finished the night with nine.

Next Up: William Penn will have a quick turnaround traveling to Lawrence, Kansas to take on Haskell Indian Nations on Saturday, Sept. 15, starting at 11 a.m.
