Committee Agrees To Fill Doland’s Vacant Seat By Appointment
Oskaloosa, Iowa – Mahaska County Supervisor Mark Doland will vacate his seat on June 5th, and a committee comprised of Mahaska County Auditor Sue Brown, Mahaska County Treasurer Sone Scott, and Mahaska County Recorder Diane Upton-Crookham agreed to fill the seat by appointment.
Doland’s term expires at the end of the year, and the appointment would fill the remainder of that term.
Scott said that it’s too close to an election to spend taxpayer dollars on a special election.
Brown indicated that the primary election was nearing, “and I think within that, the appointment could be taken care of, within the timelines that are in the code.”
Mahaska County Attorney agreed with the committee’s recommendation.
Mahaska County voters can also bring a petition forward to call for a special election up to 14 days after an appointment is made. That petition would require 1037 signatures.
If a Mahaska County resident is interested in being appointed, they can put into writing that they be considered and turn that into either the auditor, treasurer, or recorder. Requests to be considered need to be submitted by June 14th.
