Mathew Sanders, 34, of Grinnell died December 22, 2010, at this home. Funeral services are scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 28, 2010, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with the Rev. Susan Sanning, Grinnell Regional Hospice Chaplain, officiating. Pallbearers will be Marvin, Neal, and Rick Burkett, Ryan Duncan, and Jamie and Robby Gibson. Burial will be in Westfield Cemetery southwest of Grinnell. Visitation will be held from 12:00 noon to 8:00 p.m. Monday at Smith Funeral Home and where the family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00 Monday evening. Mathew was born June 14, 1976, in Grinnell, the son of Edgar and Gerri Burkett Sanders. He was raised in Grinnell and was a 1995 graduate of Grinnell High School. While in high school he was employed at Spurgeons. Following his high school graduation he attended Marshalltown Community College.
On June 12, 1997, he was united in marriage to Krystal Hoth. The couple lived near Malcom for a year and he returned to Grinnell following their divorce. He was employed at several places in the Grinnell area including Wal-Mart and Wells Fargo.
He was a member of the Society of Creative Anachronism, which is an international living history group with the aim of studying and recreating mainly Medieval European cultures and their histories before the 17th century, and enjoyed attending the annual Lilies War in Smithville, Missouri, an SCA event. Matt enjoyed collecting comic books, sewing and making glass etchings. He loved cooking as well as eating, and enjoyed spending his time on the computer, chatting with his friends on-line and playing electronic games. He loved his son, Jacob very much.
Survivors include his son, Jacob of Malcom; his parents Ed and Gerri Sanders of Grinnell; his brother, Mark (Julie) Sanders of Grinnell; two nieces, Breanna and Jena Sanders and a nephew, Gage Sanders all of Grinnell; and many other relatives. He was preceded in death by his grandparents.
