Carl W. Veldhuizen
September 18, 1932 – July 22, 2017
Oskaloosa, Iowa | Age 84

Carl Veldhuizen, 84, of Oskaloosa passed away Saturday afternoon, July 22, 2017, at his home near Oskaloosa. Carl Wayne Veldhuizen, son of William and Henrietta (Paletta) Van Veldhuizen, was born September 18, 1932, at the rural home of his parents near Cedar, Iowa. At age four the family moved to an adjacent farm, and Carl lived there the rest of his life.

Carl was a 1950 graduate of Cedar Consolidated School and following graduation continued to work with his father and brother on the family farm.

As a young man, Carl and his brother traveled to Centerville often for church activities, while there, a young lady caught his eye. On February 20, 1954, he was united in marriage to Margaret Jane Apgar, at the Centerville Gospel Church.

Because his parents had moved to Oskaloosa, Carl and Margaret could make their home on the Veldhuizen farm. Carl was born with farming in his blood, he loved the land and raising animals. Through the year, he raised cattle, sheep, chickens, hogs, had milk cows and a cow/calf operation. In later years, he and his brother were a cattle order buyers/truckers; they recently gave up those licenses. At the time of his death, he was still raising cattle and had chickens.

When his children were young, Carl enjoyed helping them with 4-H projects and as he got older, mentoring young farmers and teaching them best practices was something he believed was his duty and honor.

Carl’s love of the farm was only second to his love of the Lord and his family; Carl was a lifelong member of the Parkview Bible Church in Eddyville, where he served as a deacon and elder. He also served on the Eddyville School Board for several years. Carl was able to participate in WHO Radio Tractor Rides for 20 years, and he also enjoyed the company of friends over coffee for most of his lifetime. He and Margaret traveled to many gospel concerts, including some in the Ozarks and enjoyed many seasons at the Turkey Hill Bible Camp near Jefferson City, Missouri. He was a quiet, humble Bible scholar and shared his faith and God’s word with many. He strove to live his life as one of service to the Lord and his fellow man.

His family includes his wife of over 63 years, Margaret of Oskaloosa; his children and their spouses: Linda (& Joe) Taylor of Oskaloosa, Diane (& Dan) Hulbert of Cedar, and Les (& Patty) Veldhuizen of Oskaloosa; seven grandchildren: Leah (& Brad) Ozinga of Bussey, Rachael (& Joe) Pahl of Dike, Rebecca (& Brandon) Rozenboom of Bussey, Jessica (& Marc) Nollen of Cedar, Dr. Travis (& Katie) Hulbert of Bloomington, IN, Valerie (& Josh) Fisk of Searsboro, and Lucas Veldhuizen of Vancouver, WA; 16 great-grandchildren; a sister, Gladys Vande Krol of Waterloo; a brother and sister-in-law, Willis (& Nancy) Veldhuizen of Oskaloosa; and a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Carol & Jim Kozak of Waukee.

In addition to his parents, Carl was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Milo Vande Krol.
