Five Honored as NAIA Scholar Teams

William Penn University Athletics

Oskaloosa–Five William Penn athletic programs were recognized for exceptional work in the classroom in 2016-2017 as they were named NAIA Scholar Teams Tuesday.

A total of 1,677 programs (92 more than last year) from within the NAIA received the laurel, highlighted by three different squads sharing Scholar Team of the Year accolades at a 3.90 Grade Point Average.

The women’s golf team, led by Nik Rule, was WPU’s top crew with a 3.53 GPA. The volleyball team, led by Jennifer Carlson, was next with a 3.26 GPA. Head Coach Sean Gosewisch guided both the women’s (3.14 GPA) and men’s (3.09 GPA) cross country teams, while the women’s soccer crew claimed a 3.13 GPA during the school year.

For a team to earn an NAIA Scholar Team award, it must have a minimum 3.0 Grade Point Average (on a 4.0 scale) as defined by the institution. The team GPA includes all eligible varsity student-athletes.
