Dorothy Adams, 92, of What Cheer, died at home on Thursday, July 20, 2017. Dorothy Arlene Adams was born August 24, 1924 to Edward and Bernice Allen Kitzman.

Dorothy graduated from Thornburg School in 1942.

On October 30, 1942 she was united in marriage to Floyd R. Adams in Lancaster, Missouri. Dorothy and Floyd lived in the What Cheer community their whole life and raised six children.

Over the years Dorothy worked at several restaurants in What Cheer, detasseled corn – serving as the leader of many crews, sorted corn in the fall, and was the cook for Tri-County Schools for over 20 years. She served many years as the Farm Bureau Ag in the Classroom representative, helped with the Keokuk County Fair, was featured in the Iowa Farmer Today for her cooking abilities and entered numerous Farm Bureau cooking contests.

Dorothy was a member of the What Cheer United Methodist Church, P.E.O. Chapter Y, Eastern Star, United Methodist Women, and Indianopolis Country Club. She enjoyed sewing, cooking, attending P.E.O. meetings and conventions and spending time with her family. Dorothy lovingly made homemade noodles for every holiday and made sure every family member received an angel food cake for their birthday.

Dorothy is survived by her three daughters and sons-in-law: Peggy (& Eugene) Beasley of Sigourney, Ann (& Wendell) Hannum of West Point, and Dixie (& Tom) Moore of Keswick; her two sons and daughters-in-law: Raymond (& Donna) Adams of What Cheer and Alan (& Linda) Adams of Oskaloosa; nineteen grandchildren: Kirk (& Karla) Beasley, Gina (& Bob) Swearingen, Ginger (& Brady) Brown, Chad (& Rebecca) Hannum, Jared (& Melissa) Hannum, Tara Pope, Travis (& Tricia) Moore, Justin (& Kelly) Moore, Matthew (& Sandra) Calvert, Mitchel (& Rene) Calvert, Marty (& Lisa) Calvert, Michelle (& Rick) Podruchny, Ashly (& Jason) Dehne, April (& Nate) Phillips, Eric (& Amanda) Bos, Andrea (& Bob) Tollefson, Austin (& Chrissie) Adams, Amber (& Adam) Norris, and Alyssa (& Kendall) Meade; forty-five great grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Darlene Kirby of What Cheer.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Floyd; a daughter and son-in-law, Joyce & Mike Calvert; granddaughter, Lori Moore; great-grandson, Connor Meade; two brothers, Edward and Vernon Kitzman; and a sister, Hazel Malin.

Funeral services will begin at 11:00 am on Monday, July 24, 2017 at the What Cheer United Methodist Church.
Visitation will be held at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in What Cheer on Sunday from 4:00 to 7:00 pm.
Burial will be in the Garrett Cemetery near Delta.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the What Cheer United Methodist Church.
