The Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont Rocket softball team took down one of the state’s best teams on the road to advance to this week’s state tournament.

E-B-F (30-8), ranked #9 in Class 2A, had to hit the highway last Monday, but brought with it its ‘A’ game in a 4-1 victory over #4 Pella Christian in the Region 6 final.

Before they could meet the Eagles, the Rockets had to first dispatch Highland in the semifinals.

E-B-F did all of its damage in the middle innings, scoring three runs in the third and sixth frames and two more in the fourth and fifth.

The Rockets outhit their foes 10-4 with Haegen Boyer topping the squad with three hits; Reina Taylor and Taryn Swartz complemented her with two base knocks each. Home runs came from Teri Lane (she had two RBIs) and Lexi Taylor. Swartz rounded the pads three times, while Boyer scored twice and drove in two runs as well.

Randie Richmond was nearly untouchable in the win, striking out eight without a walk in the complete-game shutout.

The Rockets struck first and never took off the pressure to win the regional crown and advance to state. E-B-F scored right away in the first, added two more in the third, and capped its scoring with one in the fifth. PC looked for a rally, but managed only one run in the sixth inning.

Swartz produced three of her team’s eight hits, while Richmond limited the Eagles to six hits overall. Claire Jager reached base twice more via hit (one double). Boyer scored two times, while Jager ended up with two RBIs.

Richmond overcame three walks (one strikeout) for the complete-game victory.

E-B-F enters the state tournament as the #6 seed, drawing #3 seed Waterloo Columbus (34-5) in Monday’s quarterfinals in Fort Dodge. The teams will play at 5:30 p.m. on Diamond 2 with the winner facing the winner of the #2 Interstate 35/#7 Central Springs contest on Thursday.
