Rodney Loren Langfritz, 76, of Oskaloosa, died Wednesday, July 12, 2017, at his home in Oskaloosa. He was born March 1, 1941, in rural Parkersburg, Iowa, the son of Henry and Esther (Knock) Langfritz.

Rod received his education from Allison-Bristow High School, graduating with the class of 1959.

He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from 1960 – 1964. Upon his honorable discharge, he resumed farming the family farm and working at the former Carnation plant in Waverly. He then began a new career as an over-the-road truck driver, driving for the Kesley Elevator, TMC out of Des Moines, and Foodliner out of Eddyville.

Following his retirement from trucking, he served as commander, Honor Guard, and house committee chairman of the American Legion Post #34. He cooked and coordinated many steak fry’s, wedding and anniversary receptions, and class reunions. He enjoyed fishing, especially trips to Minnesota and Canada, cooking, playing cards and boating.

But the “job” he cherished most was caring for his grandchildren. He was the primary care taker for Makenzie from the time she was four months old until she went to kindergarten. He was the “kid driver” for their activities, such as camps, Bible School, preschool.

Rod was a member of the First Christian Church in Oskaloosa, where he served as deacon, usher, and volunteer for whatever needed to be done. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #34. Prior to moving to Oskaloosa, he served on the Allison-Bristow school board for six years.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 31 years, Sherry Langfritz; his beloved children and grandchildren which include his three children from his marriage to Janice Heuer: Brett (& Susan) Langfritz of Allison; Teresa Holton of Papillion, Nebraska, and Andrea (& Bob) Joss of Norwalk. His and Sherry’s daughter, Carrie (& BJ) Bowie of Oskaloosa; the children Sherry brought with her to their marriage: Ryan Meester of Cedar Falls, and Ranae (& Jim) Banicky of Oskaloosa; Grandchildren: Alyssa (& Joe) Endelman, April Langfritz, Tristan Holton, Ali Holton, Michael Holton, Sam Langfritz; Jacob Joss , Alaina Joss, Alexa Joss, Lorelei Hostetler, Makenzie Banicky, Alesha Banicky, Connor Banicky, Camryn Bowie and Gavin Bowie; Great Grandchildren: Anna, Henry, Isaac, Jack and Rowan; Mother-in-law, Anna Mae Mehmen of Parkersburg; two brothers-in-law: Ken (& Nancy) Mehmen of Aplington; David (& Kris) Mehmen of West Des Moines; one sister-in-law: Deb (& Pat) Prier of Aplington; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and father-in-law, Don Mehmen.

Funeral services will be held Monday, July 17, 2017 at 10:00 am in the First Christian Church in Oskaloosa with Reverend Tim Johnson officiating.
Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa.
Graveside Military Honors will be given by members of the Oskaloosa American Legion and V.F.W. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will begin after 12:00 noon on Sunday in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel from 1 – 4 pm to greet friends and relatives.
Memorials may be made to the Rod Langfritz Memorial Fund.
