Oskaloosa Falls Short in Extra-Inning Contests

by Wade Steinlage

A pair of extra-inning losses made for a rough week for the Oskaloosa Indian baseball team.

OHS (6-4, 1-2 LHC) opened the week Wednesday with a 5-1 win over Grinnell. The squad then lost 9-7 (8 innings) to Centerville at home Thursday before falling twice to Dallas Center-Grimes Friday, 10-9 (8 innings) and 5-1.

Oskaloosa 5, Grinnell 1

The Indians took the early advantage in their Little Hawkeye Conference opener with three runs in the second and then tacked on a pair of insurance runs down the road.

Eight hits were recorded by the hosts, while the visiting Tigers were limited to one base knock. Blake Van Veldhuizen guided the crew with a pair of doubles, while Seth Sarver managed a two-run single in the second frame.

Rian Yates produced a masterful outing, permitting just one hit in six scoreless innings. He struck out six with only two walks.

Peyton Crouse and Charlie Bandstra struggled in relief roles, but limited the damage to just one run in the seventh.

Centerville 9, Oskaloosa 7

The Indians answered Centerville’s call three separate times, but failed to come up with an extra-inning response in the non-conference setback.

OHS knotted the game at 1-1 after three innings, 4-4 after four, and 7-7 to force additional play. Unfortunately, the Reds notched a pair of runs in the top of the eighth and Oskaloosa came up empty in the bottom half.

The Indians were narrowly outhit 13-12 with Tyler Miller guiding the troops with a 3-for-4 showing. Bandstra (two runs), Sarver (two RBIs), Alex DeJong, and Bennett Spry (two RBIs) also contributed two hits each at the plate.

Three different hurlers stepped onto the mound with Noah Van Veldhuizen coming out the best with no earned runs in three innings.

Dallas Center-Grimes 10, Oskaloosa 9

Oskaloosa was once again ready to go blow-for-blow with another opponent and this time had the Mustangs on the ropes in the opener.

Trailing 4-0 early, the Indians scored all nine of their runs from the second through fifth frames to lead 9-7. Unfortunately, DC-G forced extras with two in the bottom of the seventh and won it in walk-off fashion in the eighth.

Outhit 11-8, the Indians were paced by a 2-for-3, two-run showing from Sarver. Ethan Arnold also ended up with two hits, while Spry drove in two runs. Nick Harrington converted a pair of walks into two runs.

Crouse had two tough frames, but otherwise was strong on the hump, striking out six with two walks in five innings. Only four of the seven runs he allowed were earned.

Dallas Center-Grimes 5, Oskaloosa 1

Oskaloosa’s offense was stymied in the second contest, being limited to just the one run on five hits. Miller had a team-high two hits and stole one base, while Spry singled home DeJong.

Harrington struggled in his 3 2/3-inning start, but Bandstra kept it close with 2 1/3 scoreless frames out of the bullpen (three Ks, 3 BBs).

Next Up: Oskaloosa travels to Newton Monday for a single LHC game at 7:30 p.m.
