Carl O. Darland, 90, of Oskaloosa, died Thursday, May 4, 2017, at MHP Hospice Serenity House in Oskaloosa. He was born Tuesday, February 1, 1927, near Barnes City, the son of Fred G. Darland and Zella C. Darland.

Carl graduated from Montezuma High School with the Class of 1943. Carl served in the U.S. Navy until 1948. On February 5, 1948, Carl was united in marriage to Hallene Lenox north of Oskaloosa.

Early on, Carl worked at an oil refinery in California. They later moved back to Oskaloosa and he went to work at Clow and then at 3M in Knoxville until his retirement in 1989. Following that, Carl volunteered at Lake Keomah and at the food bank at Park Church of Christ.

Carl loved reading, hunting when he was younger and walking. He was a member of Park Church of Christ in University Park.

Carl is survived by his wife of almost 70 years, Hallene Darland of Oskaloosa; three sons: Michael (& Diane) Darland of University Park, Kenny (& Debbie) Darland of Montezuma and Mark Darland of Oskaloosa; a daughter, Michele (& Steve) Johnson of Beacon; 15 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Connie Bateman; two grandchildren, Jason Darland and Ashley Darland; a great granddaughter, Brittany Medlin; four brothers: Don, Sam, Calvin and Adrian Darland; and a sister, Doris Lockard.

Graveside services and burial will be held Tuesday, May 9, 2017, at 10:30 A.M. Coal Creek Cemetery southwest of Oskaloosa with Pastor Mark Doland officiating.
As was his wish, Carl’s body has been cremated and no visitation is planned.
Memorials may be made to MHP Hospice Serenity House or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
