Anita Vermillion, 80, of What Cheer, died Monday, April 17, 2017 at the Serenity House in Oskaloosa. Anita May Vermillion was born in Oskaloosa, Iowa on May 27, 1936 the daughter of Orville Powers and Doris Smith.
Anita was united in marriage to Leonard Robert Vermillion on October 1, 1955 at the Baptist parsonage in Burlington.
Robert worked construction and Anita was a mother of four children and managed 40 head of cattle and farrowed 300 sows’.
Anita’s house was the local hang out spot for her kids and all their friends. Everyone knew they were always welcome at her house but she expected each of them to be respectful and use proper manors. Anita led by example. She knew the value of hard work, honesty and kindness. Anita viewed her role as a mother to be the most import part of her life. It was important to her to raise an honest hard working family she could be proud of.
Anita enjoyed playing bingo with friends and always looked forward to her sons’ bringing her scratch tickets. She knew her boys didn’t like classical music so she often listened to Bach and Beethoven mainly because she knew it would provide her with much needed peace and quiet. Above all Anita took the most pride in being a grandma and never missed an opportunity to spend time with her grandkids and great grandkids.
She is survived by a daughter, Cindy Bartlow of What Cheer; three sons: Kyle Vermillion and Fred Vermillion both of What Cheer and Bob Baker of Pella. “Grandma up the hill” also leaves behind ten grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.
