Hy-Vee Surprises Customer With Ten Grand

The Oskaloosa Hy-Vee recently presented Estridd Smith of Oskaloosa with $10,000 after her name was drawn as the grand prize winner in Hy-Vee’s Cash and Grocery Giveaway promotion.

Oskaloosa, Iowa – Customers scanned their Hy-Vee Perks card when at the register, which gave them an entry to win a grand prize of $10,000.

Clete Hjorth, store manager for the Oskaloosa Hy-Vee, said he wanted to make the check presentation extra special, and he devised a plan to surprise the grand prize winner. “I didn’t just want to call somebody up and tell them that they’ve won,” said Hjorth.

Setting up the surprise, Hjorth called up the winner, Estridd Smith, of Oskaloosa and told her that she had won a gift card. Hjorth explained that he like to present those in person to his customers.

When Hjorth arrived at Smith’s home, he had the winner fill out the paperwork, “and I told her I forgot the gift card in my truck.”

A fellow manager and Hjorth then gathered up the big check and some balloons, walking back up to Smith’s door. “I told her I’m sorry she didn’t win a gift card, but she actually won ten-thousand dollars instead.”

Smith was then overcome with emotions, explained Hjorth.

In the last year, the Oskaloosa Hy-Vee also gave away a pickup truck, and Hjorth said that the giveaways have been a lot of fun. “It’s really rewarding,” and Hjorth said that it’s something that can really benefit a family. “It’s fun. It’s special.”

The $10,000 grand prize was the finally of the store’s recent promotion that lasted 13 weeks. During that same time, the store gave away 10, $100 gift cards every week for 12 weeks, for an additional $12,000 in gift cards in the promotion. “We filled a lot of cupboards over the last few months,” said Hjorth.

Hjorth said that the perks and prizes are just one benefit to customers using the store Perks card. Hjorth said that Oskaloosa customers have also saved $60,000 in fuel this calendar year.
