Entrepreneur Series Continues With Iowa Rabbit

Steve De Bruin spoke to Exchange Oskaloosa about his business Iowa Rabbits as part of an ongoing series featuring business owners from the area.

Oskaloosa, Iowa – Healthy eating and enjoying a unique dining experience have helped one local entrepreneur grow his business.

Steve De Bruin owns De Bruin Rabbit and Iowa Rabbit. Those businesses produce, process and market all-natural, breed specific rabbit meat products for restaurants, retail stores and health food stores throughout the United States.

De Bruin grew up on a farm near Oskaloosa, and after a short time out of state, came back with his wife to settle down and raise a family.

Today’s consumers want to have healthy food choices and know where their food choices come from, which also offers unique dining experiences.

De Bruin used the business network that he cultivated during previous work in the culinary industry to build his new business. The volume has slowly increased over time, as word of mouth among professionals proved to be key. Amish and family farms help supply De Bruin with the needed capacity, in order to supply the increasing demand.

“Raising rabbits doesn’t require a lot of land, and has a small carbon footprint,” says De Bruin, who now has 285 Amish family farms across multiple states delivering rabbits for the operation.

Having learned from past business endeavors, De Bruin says that he now works to identify his weaknesses and to find solutions for each situation.
