Active Student Council Brings Hollywood A-List To Town
Oskaloosa, Iowa – Students from the Oskaloosa High School and Middle School were told Thursday morning they would be having an assembly at George Daily Auditorium. When the guest speaker came out, the building erupted into cheers.
Ashton Kutcher and his wife, Mila Kunis, provided a message to the students, encouraging them to “push for that dream” and not to let doubt defeat you because, as Kutcher said, “I’m just a kid from Iowa.”
“I just kept pushing and pushing,” said Kutcher about the opportunities that began to open up from those efforts. “I knew if I worked really, really hard, and stayed super focused, I could get there.
“What I really wanted to share with you guys is that you can really do it. Whatever that crazy dream is you have in your head. Whatever that thing is you believe you can make happen, you can do it,” said Kutcher.
Kutcher arrived in Oskaloosa because of the efforts of the high school student council’s participation in Iowans Helping Iowans.
Oskaloosa earned the visit by raising the most funds and pledges to volunteer.
For students, staff, and just about everyone else with the exception of a handful of school administrators, the visit came as a complete surprise. “We were sworn to secrecy,” said Stacy Bandy, Principal at Oskaloosa High School.
Bandy appreciated Kutcher’s message to the students, saying it was “spot on,” and “the message we needed … We’re always telling these kids to believe. Thinking critically. ‘You can do this.’ We’ve been sending that message to kids, and it was just great having him back it up,” added Bandy.
Kutcher and Kunis were very generous with their time, giving ample opportunities to greet many students and staff. As evidenced by the flood on local social media, they were the subject matter of many photographs during their stop.
On Thursday night, students will be showcasing their critical thinking skills at a project-based learning showcase at the high school, from 6 to 8pm.
