MAHASKA COUNTY – As a parent, you want to protect your children from any chances of being hurt. Mahaska Health Partnership Pediatrician Dr. John O’Brien, MD, explains ways you can help minimize their risk within your home.

When it comes to baby-proofing, most parents think about outlets and baby gates. “There are multiple household hazards to consider when it comes to a curious little one,” Dr. O’Brien explained. “They will use anything they can to pull themselves up, so make sure furniture like bookshelves, TV’s and lamps are securely fastened to the wall.

“Watch out for sharp corners with a newly mobile child too,” Dr O’Brien continued. “Look at coffee and end tables, fireplaces and other spots where a noggin might collide. Since they’re still wobbly on their feet for quite some time, keep any foot hazards like toys picked up as much as possible.”

Babies and toddlers are curious, so keeping hazards out of reach can save you worry when they are on the move. “Tie blind cords to the top of the curtains to avoid trip and choke hazards,” Dr. O’Brien shared. “Some house plants may also be toxic if ingested not only to your child, but any pets too, so do you research before placing them in easily accessible areas.

“Move any household cleaners including laundry detergents up and out of reach too,” Dr. O’Brien urged. “Laundry pods and dishwasher tablets are often colorful and can be mistaken for candy, so keep them out of reach. Medications can also look like a sugary treat, so store them in a child-proof location.”

When it comes to your child’s safety, taking extra precautions and constant supervision can minimize their risk of injury. “When they’re little, it’s hard to explain to children what they can and can’t get into,” Dr. O’Brien said. “A child sees something shiny or colorful and instantly wants to touch it or put it in their mouth. They’re speedy too, so keeping a close eye on them in addition to removing hazards can help keep them safe.”
